Escarpment of Laura sandstone north of Cooktown, with tropical savanna, mainly low open/layered eucalypt woodland, frequently burnt, with tongues of fire-sensitive monsoon forest types in gullies. Note cloud shadows. These sandstone formations often feature overhanging rock chambers/caves with Aboriginal paintings, mapped in detail by Percy Trezise from about the 1950s onwards, and now famous, e.g. the "Quincan Country" near Laura.
