Griffith University has a number of consultative mechanisms for health and safety, including Health & Safety Committees, Workplace Health & Safety Officers and elected staff representatives. From 2009, the following structures will be in place.
The University Health & Safety Committee carries out the functions prescribed within the Workplace Health & Safety Act 1995 (as well as having some additional roles). This committee has a number of elected staff and student representatives, and meets quarterly.
There are also Health & Safety Committees for each academic Group, reporting to the Group Pro Vice Chancellor.
A Hazardous Materials Committee reports to the Pro Vice Chancellors of Science Environment, Engineering & Technology, Health, and Arts, Education & Law.
The Institutional Biosafety Committee , reporting to the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator is required Under the Gene Technology Act 2000 to oversee all work within the University involving genetic manipulation.
Campus Life (CLF) and Division of Information Services (INS) have cross-campus Health & Safety Committees.
Staff Representatives are elected from general and academic staff to the University Health & Safety Committee.
The university has a number of Workplace Health & Safety Officers (DOC 44k) who have undergone 7 days of government accredited training. These officers provide health & safety advice & assistance to their element/academic group.
