WHAT SHOULD I DO IF SOMEONE IS SICK OR INJURED?

  1. What do I do if someone appears seriously sick or injured?

    If you are first-aid trained, as well as following the procedures below, you should follow the response you learned at training:

    Danger
    Check for any danger to self and others
    Response
    Check for a response, shout to and shake the injured/ill person
    Airway
    Make certain the airway is clear and open
    Breathing
    Check the injured/ill person is breathing, if not, 5 quick breaths
    Circulation
    Check the injured/ill persons' pulse. If present, start Expired Air Resuscitation, if pulse absent, start Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
    Defibrillation
    Apply a defibrillator (if available) and follow voice prompts
    AEDs (defibrillators) are available at the following locations:
    • Gold Coast – Outside Security Office and Health Service G33
    • Logan – L03 Information Services Bld (Foyer near Security Office)
    • Mt Gravatt – Outside First Aid room (adjacent to Security Office)
    • Nathan – Outside Security Office and Health Service N12
    • QCA - Wall space outside QCA Library
    • QCGU – Ticket sales area, QCGU foyer

    If you are not first-aid trained, you need to:

    1. Make sure the immediate area is safe - do not put yourself or anyone else in danger!
    2. If the situation appears to be a serious medical emergency, call an ambulance on 000 (remember to use an extra 0 if using an internal phone and you may need to use 112 if calling from a mobile phone) and then advise Security. Contact Security on Ext 7777 (mobile or external phones dial 3735 before the extension) to call the ambulance.

      You will need to give the following details:

      • exact location – campus, building number etc
      • what happened (be clear and concise);
      • symptoms (if possible);
      • your name.

      Stay with the sick or injured person if possible. It is preferable to use the nearest available person or mobile phone to get help. Ask the person you send to get help to come back and let you know who they have contacted.

    3. Calm and reassure the injured/ill person and make comfortable as possible.
    4. Contact your nearest First Aid Officer, or phone the Health Service at Nathan on Ext 57299 (if using a mobile or external phone dial 373 before the extension) or Gold Coast on Ext 28795 (if using a mobile or external phone dial 555 before the extension). Emergency contact notices are placed at the entrance to most buildings and can be identified by the yellow and red borders.
    5. Wait with the sick or injured person until help arrives
  2. What do I do in case of minor injury or illness?

    If the injury or illness does not appear serious, contact the nearest First Aid Officer. There are trained First Aid Officers throughout all University campuses and there are location notices inside the entrances to most buildings identified by the yellow and red border.
